Anxiety
Most of us experience feelings of anxiety and tension during our lives. Anxiety is a normal reaction and moderate levels can motivate us to work harder or protect ourselves from dangerous situations. However, during high levels of anxiety you may experience symptoms such as sweating, palpitations, chest pains, muscle tension, stomach upsets, difficulties sleeping and lose the ability to concentrate. Sometimes fear, anxiety and worry take other forms. The most common diagnoses are: panic disorder, agoraphobia, social anxiety, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, Post-traumatic stress disorder and hypochondriasis.
Panic Attacks
People often describe panic attacks as ‘coming out of the blue.’ This can be experienced as a period of intense fear which may be accompanied with physical reactions including palpitations, difficulty in breathing, sweating, trembling, chest pains, nausea, dizziness and a feeling of being detached from oneself. Panic attacks can be very frightening as individuals feel like they are dying.
Agoraphobia
Agoraphobia refers to a fear of being in open spaces because they feel as if something terrible will happen to them. Usually people experience difficulty going outside the house alone or being in a crowd even with a family member or a friend. Some people with agoraphobia also suffer from panic attacks.
Social Anxiety
Social anxiety is the persistent fear of social situations. Individuals worry that they will be judged negatively, humiliated or embarrassed by others and tend to avoid experiencing these feelings by withdrawing from social situations, such as avoiding speaking up in social gatherings, shopping and eating out.
